StudentsThe term student is used to describe an individual who is undertaking some form of education or tuition, people who are studying are students. However, particularly in the UK, the term students is typical used to describe people attending a university or similar institute of higher education rather than school children. The majority of students in the UK are undergraduates studying three year courses, the successful completion of which will earn them a Bachelors degree. Aside from the academic side of university life, students have a reputation for drinking heavily and misbehaving, which is frequently cited in a negative context in the press and the general attitudes of many people and in many cases deserved as students who may be experiencing their first time living away from home may be tempted to over do things with their new found freedom. Recently there has been a great deal of uproar in the press concerning
the alleged ordeals that first year students, commonly referred to as
freshers, may be subject to in their first week at university often called
freshers week, or welcome week. Many clubs and societies, particularly
sports teams, on university campuses are reported to encourage extremely
heavy binge drink and subject their new members to humiliating initiation
rites, whilst this certainly may be true in some instances, it is not
commonplace and few students will profess to having been subjected to
such an experience. |
